Description
Shwezigon Pagoda (Burmese ရ ် ဝ ် ဟ စေည်း ခုံ စ တေီ တော် ) is a large stupa located in Nyaung U, near Bagan, Myanmar.
Inspired by Lawkananda, it served as a model for many other Burmese-style stupas. It is bell-shaped and rests on three brick terraces decorated with terracotta plaques decorated with scenes from the jâtaka (past lives of the Buddha). All around are many small temples and pagodons, as well as the effigies of the 37 Nats, arranged to pay homage to the stupa.
The pagoda was built from 1059 by King Anawrahta to house a jaw bone and a tooth from the Buddha that he had obtained at the end of his campaign against the Kingdom of Dali (in present-day Yunnan). It was completed during the reign of his son Kyanzittha, in 1102: Inside the complex is a stone pillar bearing the inscriptions of this king.
